  2.  All of the exercises in Ear operate around the
  3.  same basic principle: Ear asks a musical question
  4.  to which you reply. Ear tells you if you are wrong
  5.  or right. If you are right, Ear asks you another
  6.  question. If you are wrong, Ear repeats the
  7.  question until you answer correctly. Your score
  8.  is recorded so you can gauge your progress, both
  9.  during a session and over a longer period of
  10.  time.

  13.  The exercises in Ear can be divided into two
  14.  basic groups: compositional exercises and
  15.  identification exercises. With compositional
  16.  exercises, you play the notes you hear on the
  17.  piano keyboard, guitar fretboard, or your MIDI
  18.  controller. These are the Single Note, Melody
  19.  Interval, Chord Composition, and Scale
  20.  Composition exercises. With the identification
  21.  exercises, you identify the chord, interval, or
  22.  scale name from a given list, rather than play
  23.  it note for note.

  25.  If you want to practice an exercise other than
  26.  the current one, pull down the Exercises menu
  27.  and select the desired exercise. The current
  28.  exercise window and the current options window
  29.  reflect the change. Click the Start button to
  30.  begin practicing.

  32.  Ear counts down the seconds before beginning the
  33.  exercise session. This gives you some time to
  34.  get poised on your instrument.

  37.  After the countdown, Ear plays a note or notes
  38.  depending on which exercise you selected. If you
  39.  selected a compositional exercise, Ear
  40.  highlights the first note of the drill as it
  41.  plays it. You can tell Ear not to highlight the
  42.  first note of each drill with the Show First
  43.  Note option. If you selected an identification
  44.  exercise, Ear displays a list of possible
  45.  answers below the exercise control window.

  49.  Once you click the Start button you have begun
  50.  an exercise session. You determine how many
  51.  drills comprise an exercise session with the
  52.  Exercise Length option. For more information on
  53.  the Pre-exercise Countdown option, the Show
  54.  First Note option, or the Exercise Length
  55.  option, refer to manual Chapter 4, "Options".

  57.  Depending on the exercise, play the notes you
  58.  hear, or select the correct chord, interval, or
  59.  scale identity from the given list.

  61.  For composition exercises, the program will
  62.  collect and evaluate your responses until a
  63.  mistake is made. The drill will be replayed so
  64.  you may try again. You will notice that the
  65.  wrong note will appear in the exercise control
  66.  panel. Its position above or below the center
  67.  line indicates the value of your response
  68.  relative to the correct note.  (HINT: After
  69.  a mistake is made and the drill is replayed,
  70.  the right mouse button may be used to play
  71.  the on-screen instrument. The program will

  74.  the correct note.)

  76.  You can click the Play button, the button with
  77.  three eighth notes above the Start/Stop button,
  78.  to hear an exercise drill repeated. The Stop
  79.  button ends an exercise session without
  80.  recording the score for your progress chart. You
  81.  can skip a drill without answering by clicking
  82.  the Skip button. The Show Answer button reveals
  83.  the correct answer to the drill. Each use of the

  85.  Skip and Show Answer buttons is equivalent to an
  86.  incorrect answer.

  88.  When you complete an exercise session, the
  89.  Exercise Summary dialog box appears. It
  90.  summarizes your performance for that session.
  91.  You can print an activity report or view your
  92.  progress chart by clicking the Report or
  93.  Progress buttons, respectively. The Exit button
  94.  closes the Exercise Summary dialog box. The Next
  95.  button closes the Exercise Summary dialog box

  98.  using a MIDI instrument, playing a middle C
  99.  has the same effect as clicking on the Next
